The Importance Of Staff Development

Posted on July 23 2013

Improvement is very necessary and obvious today. Upgrades or developments are always present in practically anything. One minute and another new, more advanced smartphone is out in the market. That is how fast-paced trends are today. Improvement happens by the minute, and that is actually good. It means we are open to changes and we’re not one to be left behind. And in the business world, even premier businesses need improvement. Because that is a key to advancement in any organization.

Staff development involves employees or members to engage with one another. It could involve a series of programs designed to improve employees’ capabilities and discover new things that they have yet to shed. This would especially prove useful for those who are afraid to go out of their shells and prefer to be introverts. This is somehow a drawback because at work, you have to commune with others and be part of the team as you’re not the only person in that scenario.

This is helpful for employees for them to acknowledge their responsibilities and be more keen on achieving their goals. These goals may be personal or those that are required by work. With activities that allow them to identify with others and embrace learning, it opens them to ideas that they could use for the betterment of their performance.

Goal Orientation

Becoming goal oriented does not mean just working on your job and getting the paycheck. It goes beyond the paycheck. What you could possibly do with that paycheck, what could be achieved with your skills, and what could be done to improve your “hidden talents” – those are the more important aspects of maintaining a job. Which is why in the workforce, you’re not confined to your cubicle to do just what your job description dictates. There are staff development activities that allow each and everyone to get involved not only to make the work more fun and exciting but to focus on improving the employees’ proficiencies.

Coaching is one way of giving employees that room for improvement. This makes them aware of their good and bad points. It gives them an idea that their good work is recognized and, in turn, acts as a motivation to do better as they go on with their work. On the other hand, the negative feedback are also just as critical because it acts as lessons that they must learn from. It could either be something that has to be eliminated or improved and turned into something fruitful.

We should not be afraid of improvement and we should not be contented with what we are capable of at the moment. Not in that sense that you’re never satisfied or crave too much, but in the sense that we should acknowledge the fact that we can always do better. We can always improve. If you’re good at what you’re doing right now and everybody thinks you’re already an expert, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to learn anymore. Again, upgrades happen fast and next thing you know, you’re the one left behind because you became too complacent with your expertise. Always embrace learning and never get tired of it.
