How To Learn To Drive

Posted on August 27 2013

Most people really do need to learn to drive eventually. While some major cities have very good transportation, there are so circumstances where having a driver's license will be handy. In most cities, it is pretty inconvenient to get by without a license. If you find a good driving school, you should be able to learn to drive confidently and safely. You should also have the skills and knowledge qualify for a driver's license.

You might simply read the driver's handbook that every state's Department of Public Safety (DPS) provides. Then you can take the written test and get a learner's permit. If you can find a licensed driver to help you practice driving, you might be able to pass the state driving test too. This sounds simple, but learning all of the rules and getting somebody to practice with you might not be that easy.

Learn To Drive At A Good Driving School

You might turn to a private driving school. These school provide basic classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving lessons. The packages offered might be different for teen and adult drivers. Most states have much stricter requirements for teen drivers, so the packages are larger and more expensive. Adult drivers might just need to take a few classes and driving lessons, and these packages might be fairly inexpensive. States expect adults to be more responsible than teens, and so they take extra steps to protect younger drivers.

Classroom Instruction For New Drivers

Classroom lessons might cover the basic knowledge you will need to pass your state's written driver's exams. This includes safety rules, street signs, and actions you should take in a variety of circumstances. Most people have a fairly easy time passing this class after they take a few classes. Others can pass it after reading the state's driving manual.

Most people already know how to recognize common street signs like stop and yield signs, but they might not know the exact steps they should take in different situations. Both classes and the driver's manual should clearly lay these rules and actions out.

Driving Lessons For New Drivers

But classroom instruction only takes you so far. It is one thing to read about the basics of taking turns at a four-way stop, and another thing entirely to encounter one at a very busy intersection. This is why it is very important to reinforce your knowledge with actual practice. When you practice driving in a variety of different situations, you should be able to handle complex situations fairly automatically. This is the skill you really need to be a skillful and safe driver.

Practice Driving Between Driving Lessons

One of the best ways to learn to drive is to combine practice with driving instruction. Most private driving schools have trained instructors that can supervise you while you are developing the skills you need to handle streets and highways. However, it is always best if these sessions are reinforced with lots of practice while accompanies by an experienced driver.

Teenagers usually practice with their parents. Many states require that they practice with another driver who is over 21, so older siblings are not usually qualified. Adults who have been driving for a long time are able to anticipate problems and give good advice. Even though lots of parents dread this task, it usually has to be done in order to make sure that a teen becomes a good driver eventually.

If you are already and adult, you might not have parents around who can help you. You might ask a friend to help you. You might also be able to pay a private or even an independent driving instructor to drive with you so you can practice. It might be expensive to pay for an instructor to help you practice, but it might be your only alternative if you cannot convince a friend or family member to let you practice in his car. Obviously, these driving instructors will need to provide a car. If you are not already licensed, you probably do not have your own car either.

Learn To Drive Safely With The Right Combination of Classroom Instruction, Driving Lessons, And Practice

The right combination of driving lessons, classroom instruction, and practice can help you become a good driver. It can also help you pass your state's written and road test. If you can successfully complete the lessons at a private school, you have a good chance of passing your state tests. You should know that many people do not pass the first time, but you should not get frustrated if you need to take the test a couple of times. Some people get very nervous when they take the test with a state official. Think of each of these tests as an opportunity to learn even more about driving.

The best way to learn to drive is to combine lots of practice with some formal instruction. The formal instruction can teach you the basic rules and help develop your skills. Practice will make you more confident and reinforce the knowledge you gain during your classes.

Learning to drive the right way might take an investment of time and money. But driving is an important skill. Besides, driving well can save you a lot more money in the long run. You will be likely to avoid accidents, pay less for insurance, and enjoy your time behind the wheel.
